The HSBC Waratahs compete in the Super 14, the Southern Hemisphere’s premiere provincial competition. Held from February to May each year, the tournament pits teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa against each other in a 14-week, round robin competition.

2008 was a stellar year for the HSBC Waratahs. Finishing second in the regular season they went on to meet the Crusaders in the Final in Christchurch. The home team won the title 20-12 in a thrilling match.

2007 saw the Waratahs finish in 13th position at the conclusion of a season marred by injury to captain Phil Waugh and fellow Wallabies Daniel Vickerman, Alex Kanaar, David Lyons and Matt Dunning. The Waratahs lost six games in 2007 by seven points or less.

In 2006 – the debut year of the Super 14 following its expansion from the Super 12 competition played between 1996 and 2005 – the Waratahs won through to the semifinal stage, where they narrowly lost to the Hurricanes 16-14 in Wellington.

In 2005 the Waratahs reached their first ever Super Rugby Final, losing 35-25 to the Crusaders in Christchurch.
