Tooheys New Cup

The Tooheys New Cup was Sydney club Rugby’s premier competition between 2002 and 2006.

Originally featuring the 12 Sydney clubs, the Tooheys New Cup was won in its first season by Eastwood, who toppled Sydney University 19-15 in the decider.

The Woods were back again a year later, defeating Randwick 29-14 to retain their grip on the title.

The Canberra Vikings were admitted into the competition for the 2004 season, making the semifinals in their first year. However Randwick and Eastwood would again face off in the Grand Final, with Randwick turning the tables winning 35-22.

The fourth Tooheys New Cup was taken out by a dominant Sydney University outfit, the Students far too strong for Eastwood in the Grand Final scoring a 41-5 victory.

Canberra was ejected ahead of the 2006 season, which was also the last in the competition’s history. Again Sydney University was at the forefront with the Students toppling Minor Premier Randwick 16-10 in the Grand Final.

In 2007 the Tooheys New Cup has been replaced by the Tooheys New Shute Shield, which reverts to Sydney Premier Rugby status from this year onwards.
