After missing most of the 2007 season through injury, Phil Waugh returned to captain the Waratahs to their second Super 14 Final last year and was voted the team’s Best Forward.
Waugh’s place in history was also assured when he brought up his 100th state cap in the semifinal victory over the Sharks, becoming just the fourth player to bring up a century of appearances behind former teammates Matt Burke, Chris Whitaker and David Lyons.
Born in Sydney on 22 September 1979, Waugh grew up on the northern beaches before completing his Higher School Certificate at the Shore School in North Sydney, where he captained every team he played in from the 13As through to the 1st XV. After three seasons of GPS Rugby, Waugh has gone on to captain Australian Schools, Australian U19s, Australia A, the Waratahs and the Wallabies.
