The tour was devised by Dubbo-based NSWRU development officer Matt Tink as a way to provide a diversion for kids in drought-hit areas.
Those who took part were treated to three hours of skill drills and competitions, with Caldwell – who hails from the town of Young, one and a half hours from Forbes – a special attraction.
“We drove from Dubbo to Forbes today and the place is an absolute dustbowl, so it’s great to be able to get out here and put smiles on the kids faces,” Caldwell said.
“Even though it’s getting close to the middle of summer the Rugby skills on show were pretty impressive, the kids really got stuck in.
“Hopefully the remaining two days will be as successful as this one.”
Arguably the highlight of the day however didn’t involve Rugby, with the kids flocking to the sprinklers that were briefly trained on the Grinsted Oval cricket pitch.
The drought relief tour will visit Nyngan on Tuesday before wrapping up in Narrabri on Wednesday.
