Courses on Offer

The Training Department at NSW Rugby stages a series of education courses for coaches and match officials.  The courses offer both theoretical and practical information and instructions.  The courses are held throughout the year at various locations throughout NSW.

The following courses are offered:

Smart Rugby

SmartRugby is an Occupational Health and Safety program for Australia's Rugby participants. To be fully effective it requires ongoing commitment rather than just occasional attention. This 'train-the-trainer' session ensures that all coaches and referees are skilled in the correct safety techniques to develop confidence in contact amongst their players/members.

Coaches are required to cover this material in on-field sessions to players throughout the each season. Referees are required to understand the material and apply to the management of all games.

The course covers Balance and Stability, Tackle, Support at the Ruck and Maul, Basic Scrum Safety, Mayday Procedure, Lineouts and Restarts, Foul Play, Injury Management.

Coaching Kids Rugby

The Coaching Kids Rugby (CKR) – Refereeing Kids Rugby (RKR) courses will teach you to either coach or referee rugby at Mini and Midi levels (U8 – U12s).

The course does not result in coach or referee accreditation, but it will result in a certificate that allows the participants to coach or referee modified rugby.

This course will give participants a SmartRugby qualification

Foundation

This course provides an introduction to coaching and refereeing the 15-a-side game. The course has an emphasis on the core skills, game elements, and coaching and refereeing principles involved at all levels of Under U13-U19 and senior Rugby.

For each element of the game (ie attack, defence, scrum, lineout, tackle, ruck, maul, etc) the course will cover: The relevant Laws, tactics to be employed by players and coaches, correct techniques to be taught to players, practical coaching advice such as relevant drills, and referee management (where to stand, what communication to use, etc).

Level 2 Coach

This course has a greater emphasis both on the tactical aspects of each part of the game as well as the technical skills required to choose such options. It is the aim that all accredited Level 2 coaches are creative as well as being knowledgeable so that the game can benefit from the individual enterprise of both themselves and their players.

The lecture units of the Level 2 course can be separated into four modules: Becoming an Effective Coach, Individual Skills - Key Factor Analysis, The Elements of Rugby, and Ancillary Units.
