Competition in the Shute Shield hots up this week, thanks to the injection of nine FxPro Super Rugby players who return to club duty.  Round eight is a vital week for the top four sides, with only three points separating Southern Districts, Eastwood, Eastern Suburbs and Manly on the competition ladder.

The return of HSBC Waratahs hooker Josh Mann-Rae (Manly) and wing Ateleni Pakalani (Southern Districts) from South Africa will boost their club sides, as both look to cement an all-important top-six position ahead of next week's bye.

Manly suffered the first defeat of the season to Eastern Suburbs last round to slip to fourth spot. The Marlins will face Eastwood this weekend for the ABC TV game of the day at Manly Oval and will be boosted by Mann-Rae who will start at prop, adding to a forward pack that already boasts the likes of HSBC Waratahs Greg Peterson and Tevita Metuisela.

Lining up against them, the return of their captain Hugh Perrett from the Melbourne Rebels will bolster second place Eastwood's efforts though, as will the presence of Western Force No 8 Locky McCaffery who will pack down next to his younger brother Miles, making for a deadly back row combination.

Southern Districts will go from strength to strength as Pakalani makes his return on the wing this week after some impressive performances in state colours, while Western Force prop Tetera Faulkner will provide some assistance up front. An impressive bonus point performance over Northern Suburbs propelled the Rebels to top spot last weekend and eleventh-placed Penrith will not only have the tough task of containing Pakalani, they will also be threatened by fellow HSBC Waratahs Grayson Hart and Brackin Karauria-Henry who have played key roles in their side's rise to the top of the ladder.

Other FxPro Super Rugby players making a return to club rugby this week include Western Force fly half Dave Harvey who will play his first game for Northern Suburbs against his old club side Gordon. Western Force halfback Josh Holmes will play for Warringah this against Sydney University at Sydney University Oval No.1, while Force centre Patrick Dellit will bolster Eastern Suburbs in the midfield when they take on Randwick at Coogee Oval.

Other round eight matches will see the high flying Parramatta take on West Harbour at Concord Oval. The Two Blues put on one of their best performances of the season which saw their outside backs tear up Gordon's defensive line, with centre Iese Leota picking up a hat trick of tries.

As usual, you can catch all the Shute Shield action on ABC 1 from 3pm every Saturday afternoon in NSW and the ACT. For interstate viewers, tune in at 4am on Tuesday mornings nationally on ABC 1 for the replay or alternatively you can catch up on ABC Iview.

In a new addition to viewing rugby in 2012, Club Rugby TV provides rugby viewers with the option to watch two full Shute Shield games in HD quality each week including commentary, highlights and interviews. For $35 a season, Shute Shield rugby fans have the added choice to catch up on all of the weekends' action. Club Rugby TV allows you to watch the rugby on your computer, Iphone, Ipad and IPTV all in full HD.

You can also stay in touch with the Shute Shield on Facebook via http://www.facebook.com/shuteshield or on http://www.facebook.com/abcshuteshield where you can catch game highlights and a preview of the upcoming ABC TV match.
