Eastern Suburbs’ lock Phil Mathers will lead theSydney team in this year’s annual encounter against the GrainCorp NSW Country Gold Cockatoos. Having captained the side that defeated Country 41-17 in last year’s encounter, Mathers will be hoping to do the double against the boys from the bush and leads a Sydney side chock full of Shute Shield talent.
Hoping to cause an upset will be Tamworth Pirates backrower Josh Stewart, skipper of the Graincorp NSW Country Gold Cockatoos. Having last month guided the Cockatoos to back to back victories over Queensland Country, Stewart was last week awarded the Will Tanner Medal as Country’s 2012 Player of the Year.
The match will be played at Concord Oval on Saturday with a 3.10pm kick off and screened live on ABC 1 in NSW and the ACT. For interstate viewers, tune in at 4am on Tuesday mornings nationally on ABC 1 for the replay or alternatively you can catch up on ABC Iview.
