Tatafu Polota-Nau was officially recognised as the fans’ favourite NSW player of 2012 last night.
The HSBC Waratahs and Wallaby hooker was presented with the inaugural Members’ Choice Player of the Year award at last night’s 2012 Matthew Burke Cup Awards Dinner by one of the members who voted for him, Christina Lawrence.
Selected from all those who nominated the eventual winner in last month’s online members-only poll, Christina attended the function as a VIP guest before taking to the stage to announce the winner. As well as the trophy, Polota-Nau also received a personally engraved commemorative ring, designed by one of Waratahs Rugby’s new partners, PENDANTS Australia, who also created an exclusive specially-commissioned Waratah pendant for Christina.
Before announcing the winner, Christina described her reasons for voting for the ever-entertaining hooker. “On the field, he's always giving 100% if not more, he’s all heart. Off the field, it's never too much for another photo or signature, he’s always willing to take his time with fans. He’s a true gentleman.”
With over 30% of members’ votes, Polota-Nau beat fellow forwards Benn Robinson and 2012 Players’ Player of the Year Dave Dennis (who came a close second with 24%), as well as and third-placed Berrick Barnes (15%) and Adam Ashley-Cooper, who was named Best Back of 2012.
