Blue Mountains Rugby Club is mourning the death of one of its most popular players after 26-year old flanker Grant Opie passed away last weekend.
After representing third grade at the club’s ‘Back to Blue Mountains day’ on Saturday, Grant tragically passed away that night when he slept through a fire in his house and was unable to free himself.
Grant pulled on the double blue jumper on 88 occasions mainly in his preferred position of flanker. The former Blue Mountains Grammar student joined the club in 2007 and quickly cemented a permanent place in the Blueys 1st Grade outfit, his most notable achievements including being a member of the Blueys’ all conquering 2011 First Grade Premiership side that lifted the Clarke Cup for the first time since 1979, winning the Dave Mackie Trophy for 2011 Best & Fairest in First Grade and being voted Players’ Player of the year by his First Grade team mates.
A talented and respected local builder, Grant stepped down to the thirds this season after starting his own building company. Currently sitting 10 points clear at the top of the table, his team will win the Minor Premiership this coming weekend.
Described as a true gentleman, Grant entertained the Bluey’s crowd with his tenacious defence and never say never attitude. He will be sadly missed by all his mates at Blue Mountains Rugby.
The service for Grant will be held tomorrow, Friday August 17, 2012 at the Springwood Civic Centre, Macquarie Rd, Springwood at 11am. Following the Service everyone is invited to the Blue Mountains Rugby Clubhouse, Explorers Rd, Lapstone from 1pm to celebrate the life of ‘a dear mate’. All club members are asked to wear their club polo shirt with jeans.
