Rugby recognised among finalist in NSW Sport Awards


Rugby has been recognised across four categories in the 2016 New South Wales Sports Awards.

 

Waratahs Board Member and former Wallabies and Waratahs player Al Baxter has been named a finalist in the Volunteer Director of the Year category.  Baxter brings to the Board a wealth of Rugby knowledge as Australia’s most capped Test prop and the second most capped Waratah of all time. Joining the Board in 2010, Baxter now works as a senior sports architect with Cox Richardson Architects.

 

Amy Perrett had an outstanding 2016 when she refereed at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games as well as at all all HSBC Women’s Sevens World Series tournaments. Named a finalist in the Official of the Year category, Perrett debuted as the first ever female Assistant Referee for Super Rugby in 2016 as well as refereed two Women’s 6 Nations matches and two Women’s Internationals. A regular referee in the Shute Shield, she also refereed two National Rugby Championship matches.

 

Long standing Rugby official, Graeme Kennan, will also be recognised on the night in the prestigious Distinguished Long Service category.  Kennan long rugby career with his beloved St Ives, along with his service to Suburban Rugby made him a worthy recipient along with 17 other inductees. Over the years Kennan served as President and Secretary of St Ives RFC, recipient of the Peter Kelly Medal for Service to Rugby, Australian Sports Medal for Services to Rugby and to this day still serves as the Vice President of the St Ives RFC.  He has been an integral part of the development of Rugby in NSW and a worthy recipient of the award.

 

The HSBC Sydney 7’s was also named as a finalist for the 2016 Event of the Year.

 

Now in its 22nd year, the prestigious NSW Sports Awards celebrate the finest achievements by NSW athletes, teams, coaches, administrators and organisations in 2016.

 

The awards ceremony will be held at Navarra Venue’s Curzon Hall in Marsfield on Thursday 23 February 2017. Tickets are now on sale for the dinner, with all details, including the full list of finalists, available on the Sport NSW website at www.sportnsw.com.au
