Friday arvo marks more Coastal Cup fun in the park

The Coastal Cup has picked up where it left off last year with over 300 boys and girls taking part in weekly games Rugby 7s in the playing fields of Centennial Park.

With the competition now in its 5th year, students from the Sydney Coastal Zone fill spots in 32 teams spanning from U8’s through to U12’s every Friday afternoon.

NSWRU Development Officer for Sydney South, East and Inner West Tom Keft says the Coastal Cup is the first rugby experience for hundreds of kids.

“The Coastal Cup provides two games each week for over 300 boys and girls,” said Keft. “It’s great to give every student some kind of exposure to an Olympic sport in Rugby 7s.”

Prior to the competition’s commencement, all participants are given a crash course in the principles of the game by NSW Rugby Development Officers.

“Before the games got underway, all students and teachers were taken through a training week which focuses on the safety aspects of the game and the NSW Waratahs values,” said Keft.

The Coastal Cup will run every Friday afternoon up to and including August 25th. Each week, a couple of NSW Waratahs players will come down to help out the Development Officers and cheer on the teams!
