A succession of injuries following his Super Rugby debut as a 21-year-old in 2007 meant Dave Dennis entered season 2010 with a solitary NSW cap to his name.
However after being a bolter on the Wallabies 2009 Spring Tour, Dennis has gone on to feature in 30 of the HSBC Waratahs 31 Super Rugby matches in the past two seasons and in 2012, amassed 14 caps for Australia and rounded off the season by collecting the prestigious Players’ Player of the Year award.
Well-respected amongst his teammates, Dennis polled third in the previous year's Matthew Burke Cup voting behind Kurtley Beale and Tatafu Polota-Nau. His strong form in 2011 saw him again selected in the Wallaby squad and while not a member of the final 30-man RWC 2011 squad, he was one of a select group of players to train-on throughout the Tournament. His reward was a place on the Spring Tour to the UK, where he started in non-cap XV that defeated the Barbarians by 60-11 at Twickenham.
A talented all rounder, Dave was a keen cricketer at school and played rugby league for Hawkesbury and NSW Emerging Blues, up until the age of 17.
After leaving Comleroy Road Public School in Kurrajong, Dave was first introduced to rugby in year seven at Richmond High School and relished the new challenge. Taught the basics of the game by his teacher at the time, Mr (Kev) Radley, Dave was honoured to earn his fourth international cap in front of Mr Radley and his wife Julie, who were amongst the 82,000-strong Allianz Stadium crowd that cheered the Wallabies home to a three-Test whitewash over Wales in the third and final Test of the Castrol EDGE series in June 2012.
A former Nepean Junior, Dave was recently made a Patron of the Hawkesbury Valley club is a regular visitor to the East Kurrajong suburb where he grew up with sister Amy and brother Matt and where parents Mary and John still live. He now lives with his partner and fellow professional athlete Mo’onia Gerrard in Kensington. A member of the NSW Swifts and Australian Diamonds netball teams, Mo’onia is the sister of former HSBC Waratah Mark Gerrard and cousin of current NSW and Wallabies star Wycliff Palu.
Outside rugby, Dave is studying for a Graduate Diploma of Commerce at Sydney University and enjoys spending time with his family and friends, brushing up on his cookery skills (although he says nothing beats his mum’s lamb cutlets, sweet potato mash and dumplings) or the occasional round of golf, playing off a handicap of 10 ‘on a good day’.
